A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice!
Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higherâfor that world or ours.
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himselfâand his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.
Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.
Kingâs storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boyâand his dogâmust lead the battle.
Early in the Pandemic, King asked himself: âWhat could you write that would make you happy?â
âAs if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted cityâdeserted but alive. I saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. I saw smashed statues (of what I didnât know, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. Those images released the story I wanted to tell.â

4.5 stars! this is my first whole stephen king book. I've never been able to get any further than about a tenth through any book of his, but this one will be one of my favourite reads of the year. it's a bit long, but I think that honestly adds to the story, and if the length still bothers you, the book can definitely be read as a sort of two-in-one deal. I'd actually say, that if you don't like fantasy, then this book might be a good place to start, because the first third or so is literally just about a boy befriending and old man and his dog, without much fairy tale at all. the reason the book doesn't get 5 stars is because it has this weird vibe of "was written thirty years ago," attached with all the weird little comments you get about weird views on women from the perspective of a man who is not misogynistic, but the world he lives in is... I don't know how else to explain how I was sometimes taken out of the book because of how a woman would i.e. be described as "no she wasn't Pretty like other girls â instead she was BEAUTIFUL, and I am the person in the world who sees that THE BEST!" which I don't think is an opinion to really be proud of?? it's not a deal breaker, and the only reason I point it out is because this book came out in 2022, and I take it as a given that it has been edited sometime this decade, and thus, this older-timey way of depicting women doesn't have the excuse of "well, it was written decades ago!" OVERALL, great read, best dog, big recommend
